The Reserve Bank of India on Friday announced withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes from circulation, and existing notes in circulation can either be deposited in bank accounts or exchanged by September 30.

Exchange of Rs 2000 notes allowed up to Rs 20,000 limit at bank branches from May 23

The central bank also said in order to ensure operational convenience and to avoid disruption of regular activities of bank branches, the exchange of Rs 2,000 notes into notes of other denominations can be made up to a limit of Rs 20,000 at a time at any branch starting from May 23.

Reacting to RBI's direction of withdrawing Rs 2000 currency notes, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, it was not Rs 2000 dhamaka, but a billion dollar "dhoka" to a billion Indians.

Taking to Twitter, the Bengal CM said, "So it wasn’t ₹2000 dhamaka but a billion dollar dhoka to a billion Indians. Wake up, my dear brothers and sisters. The suffering we have endured due to demonetisation can’t be forgotten and those who inflicted that suffering shouldn’t be forgiven."

Congress targets PM Modi over withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes

Congress targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the RBI announcement on the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes from circulation, saying the move was "typical of our self-styled vishwaguru" and his method of "first act, second think". The opposition party also said demonetisation has come a full circle and added that the Rs 2,000 note was a "band-aid to cover up the foolish decision of demonetising" Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.
